Van Gogh’s hidden treasures come to light…

Written by Leanna Pierson on July 31, 2008

Van Gogh hidden underneaeth patch of grass...It is a well known fact that Vincent Van Gogh would paint over his own work again and again.

Now, in 2008 scientists have finally revealed the portrait of a woman thought to have been hiding just under the surface of “Patch of Grass,” created in 1887. This new technique based on “synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy” (repeat that three times fast) can measure the chemicals in pigment that help decipher the various images between each painted layer. These chemical differences are what separate one color from another within the layered surface of the painting forming a visually separate image.

This discovery will give art historians incite to the evolution of Van Gogh’s work and this newest technique will provide even more answers to other lost images perhaps hidden just under the surface of other artist’s paintings.

Can you imagine if they find a another masterpiece hidden behind the Starry Night oil painting?

Can Art Ever Be More Complete – Mark Rothko

Written by Amitai Sasson on July 19, 2008

I wanted to share with you this amazing video of Mark Rothko, narrated by Simon Schama, part of “The Power of Art” BBC show, depicting Schama’s impression of Mark Rothko’s Secret paintings at the Tate Modern Museum:

It’s a wonderful tribute to such an influential artist. Rothko’s passionate yet simple creations transcend above the canvas and transport us to a place that only art can take us…

I love how Simon Schama remarks upon viewing the Rothko’s:

Can anything be less cool then this room in the heart of Tate Modern?
Further away from the razzle dazzle of contemporary art, and the Frantic hustle of now?

This isn’t about now, this is about forever. This is a place where you come to sit in the low lights and feel the ions rolling by to be taken towards the gates that open upon the threshold of eternity, to feel the poignancy of our comings and our goings, our entrances and our exists, our births and our deaths, womb tomb and everything in between.

Can Art ever be more complete, more powerful? I don’t think so…

Effects of Color on Claude Monet’s Poppies

Written by Amitai Sasson on July 2, 2008

Claude Monet painted The Poppy Field, near Argenteuil in 1873. Painted in the wildflower fields outside Argenteuil, this painting reveals Monet’s passion for color. With dabs of reds, he scatters the poppies in a natural abundance through a lush green field.

Poppies, Near Argenteuil, Claude Monet, 1873.

In the foreground, Monet illustrated his darling Camille and their son Jean with simple strokes of violet, black, and white.

In the countryside, a vivid splash of poppies seems to move in a gentle breeze. The position of the poppies seems uncertain. To many viewers, they appear to quiver as the wind blows.

Monet who is unknown as the classic Impressionist, some might say the father of Impressionism, painted not a landscape but the impression of a landscape.

Play with the slider and see how the reds and greens just turn this painting on and give it life.
